With the variety of Internet-of-Things (IoT) sensors, actuators, and displays, many promising applications can be built for the smart home, such as home energy management systems (HEMS) and elderly monitoring. However, the heterogeneity can also make it complex to design and develop useful and effective applications for occupants and researchers. We have developed the FRESH experimental smart home research platform to facilitate the modular development of smart home applications with hardware and software components, and the evaluation of different solutions by supporting experimentation.
